WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE?

Over 3,000 cities nationwide hold Relay for Life events that benefit The American Cancer Society. These events run 18 continuous hours in honor of those that have fought long battles with cancer. We celebrate those that have survived their battle as well as remember and honor those that have lost their battle. Teams are formed in each town that work year-round to get donations and hold fundraisers to earn monies for their team donation. Each team goal should be to have 12-15 team members that can get $100.00 in donations and also help walk laps to represent their team throughout the event. Teams should also encourage recruitment of other teams. The year peaks at the actual Relay for Life event... you have to experience it! There's really nothing else on earth like it. Teams pitch tents and really have a blast! Please consider joining our SURVIVOR RACING team, or start a team of your own!

The Big Walnut Area Relay for Life is June 4-5, 2010 at the Big Walnut High School in Sunbury, Ohio. Come join in the fun!

The Survivors will walk the first lap at 6pm Friday joined by their caretakers and loved ones for the second lap.

The Luminaria Ceremony Friday from 10-11 pm is "in honor of" cancer survivors and "in memory of" loved ones who have lost their battle. It is a definite highlight of the Relay.

Luminarias and/or flowers for the Memory Garden have been purchased via SURVIVOR RACING for the following people:

IN HONOR OF: Bryan Scott Corbin, Cheryl Headlee, Jewell Sabados, Richard Hoke, Shelley Grimm, Fred Blanton, Cheryl McGee and Cliff Tarpley.

IN MEMORY OF: Robert Corbin, Betty Corbin, Arden Graves, Helen Graves, John DeLong, Wilma DeLong, Kimberly Conley, Erin Stanley Vickers, Charles Williams, John Rataiczak, Genie Rataiczak, Dean Cockrell, Mike Richey, Joan Bolander, Claude Stepp, Jean Rutledge, Todd Muller and Dave Powell.

We would like to thank Dick Logan ("Maude", pictured left) and Dan Shaw ("Emma") for representing our SURVIVOR RACING Relay for Life team in the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 Ms. Relay Contests.

Ms. Relay is a contest in which all Relay teams get a volunteer to dress in drag and spend an hour going around the Relay event collecting donations. The contestant collecting the most donations wins. We were fortunate to have Dick be the 2005 Ms. Relay winner, collecting $270.00. Dan was a close runner-up. In 2006 they combined forces and earned the most money. In 2007 and 2008 they were runner-up.

The contest generally runs from 8-8:45 pm on Friday night. The new "Ms.Relay" is crowned at 9 pm.

Dick and Dan are known as "Maude & Emma" in this area and spend many hours volunteering their time to do their show and are very talented comedians and singers. They donate proceeds to different charities in the area. If you would like information on booking them you can call Dick at 740-965-9420.

The "First Annual Community Cookout for Cancer" sponsored by SURVIVOR RACING's Relay for Life team was held May 7, 2005 on the Town Square in Sunbury, Ohio, raising over $3,000.00 for The American Cancer Society. It was a wonderful "family day" and was a huge success.

In 2006 the name was changed to"Family Fun Fest for Cancer" and was held May 6, 2006 on the Town Square in Sunbury, Ohio and raised over $4,500.00 for The American Cancer Society. It was catered by Carrabba's Italian Grill. We also added a live auction this year (thanks goes out to Richard Helwig, Auctioneer and Grace Bell, planner).

The third annual "Family Fun Fest for Cancer" was held May 5, 2007 on the Town Square in Sunbury, Ohio again. Carrabba's Italian Grill was on board to feed us again. The weather did NOT cooperate, and thanks to the loyalty of our friends and community we were still able to raise over $4,000.00 collectively for the Sunbury Relay.

The fourth annual "Family Fun Fest for Cancer" was held May 3, 2008 on the Town Square in Sunbury, Ohio again. Carrabba's Italian Grill remained loyal and did a fantastic job as always with their wonderful food. The Live Auction changed to a Silent Auction and was very successful. Our plan to add inflatable jump houses and obstacle courses had to take a back seat and the weather was again full of rain, rain and more rain. Unbelievably, the community remained loyal as well and once again this event raised over $4,000.00 collectively for the Big Walnut Area Relay for Life. A special thanks to all the volunteers that helped to make this happen and endured the rain. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!

The fifth annual "Family Fun Fest for Cancer" was held May 2, 2009 on the Town Square in Sunbury, Ohio again. We had a backup rain plan this year to hold the event at the Big Walnut High School gym, and if we had given in to the weather report we would have done that. However, God blessed us with beautiful weather the entire day so we were glad we walked in faith. Thanks to Fling Hardware for the use of their building for the lunch portion. Carrabba's Italian Grill came through once again with a delicious lunch! The even brought in over $6,000.00 for the Big Walnut Relay for Life teams.

Come join us in 2010 on May 1st on the Square for our sixth annual Family Fun Fest for Cancer!

Questions on any of these events may be directed to Tammy Corbin at 740-965-2763 or tammy@corbinenterprises.org .

THANKS SO MUCH for helping the Survivor Racing Team to the finish line in their first Relay year in 2004. We got rained out in Sunbury May 21-22 and went on to Delaware June 18-19 to make our commitment. We WON THE SPIRIT TROPHY for the entire Delaware-Sunbury combined Relay for Life. We raised $1,925.00 for The American Cancer Society.
